To Cleanse or Not To Cleanse

Cleansing is a popular topic surrounding weight loss, detoxing and overall health in the body. Many people believe that a magic pill or an "ancient berry" found in the mountain ranges of South Africa will allow you to lose 10 lbs in 10 minutes... The internet and media in general have done a great job of marketing these herbs, berries, proprietary blends etc. in order to get you to buy their product... But are these cleanses and products worth it? And are they even that effective? 


Many people believe that something external that you put into your body does the so called "cleansing" that we are all after. What I want to suggest to you is that this way of thinking is flawed. You see, the body has it's own "cleanser". His name?


The Liver.


The liver's job is to cleanse the body of toxins and such. Think in terms of alcohol. People who drink regularly joke about how much stress they are putting on their liver.. and it's true. It is the liver's job to detoxify the body of toxins, like alcohol.


No fruit, vegetable, herb etc can "detoxify" the body.. it can only help the liver do it's job more effectively.. which is to detoxify the body.


So instead of focusing on the "10 day cleanses" out there as the solution, why don't we focus on helping our liver out the best way we can (Maybe eating minimally processed whole foods for example)... and if we can do that we won't even have the need to go on a cleanse in the first place!


Remember, your body was programmed to be resilient and keep you alive and healthy at all times. Let's help it do it's job.
